Background of Thesis Project

Reduced fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions are top priorities in current driveline development. Usage of multiple injections is a powerful tool to tailor the heat release in order to maximize the thermodynamic efficiency and minimize the fuel consumption. Virtual verification with engine simulation becomes more and more important which requires accurate physical models for heat transfer, injection, combustion, and emissions formation. This work regards the development of an existing combustion model to better cope with multiple injections.

Suitable Background

Candidates should be in their final year of Master studies and preferably in the faculties of Mechanics, Applied Physics or computer science. An interest in combustion engines combined with good analytical skills and excellent understanding of programming is a good background.

Relevant courses include but are not limited to: Combustion engines, programming and automatic control engineering.

Description of Thesis Work

Initially a short literature study should be conducted in order to gain information and experience from previous work. The actual work regards to take our existing combustion model which is implemented in FORTRAN and develop it further for better accuracy when used with multiple injections.

The tools to be used are MATLAB and FORTRAN.
