Ericsson Master Thesis - mmW Antenna Calibration in Lund, Sweden

Background

Future communication equipment will have radio units using antenna arrays with a large number of antenna elements.

This will enable efficient communication using high antenna gains in wanted directions as well as spatial division of the common radio frequency resource.

High quality control of radio frequency signals are required to achieve this functionality.

This thesis work will implement and verify a method to achieve needed accuracy on radio frequency signals.

A draft proposal on algorithms exists, hardware is available as well as instruments and anechoic chamber for practical test

Calibration Method

Delay and amplitude response for each radio transmitter/receiver has to be calibrated. In the proposed method the radio is calibrated using coupling measurements between elements followed by an algorithm to find best estimate of delay and amplitude responses on each transmitter/receiver. Test interface is the digital base band interface to the radio.

Fundamental algorithm is known.

The algorithm need prior knowledge of the antenna coupling matrix, actual coupling in the passive antenna array.

This is however not known and we have a proposed method to estimate this coupling matrix using a combination of anechoic chamber measurements where the radio can be controlled to receive a well-defined planar wave and coupling measurements between receive and transmit ports.

Included in Thesis project:

  • Transmitter/receiver calibration as well as estimation of antenna coupling matrix
  • Investigate, select and code existing algorithms to be used in the project.
  • Write control software to control device under test as well as test instrument
  • Perform tests in anechoic chamber
  • Ericsson proprietary existing hardware using 64 antenna elements shall be used as device under test
  • Quality validation of results, will require measurements in anechoic chamber.
  • Publish results in thesis report.
