IBM Master Thesis: Applying Data Science in IoT for a sustainable city in KISTA, Sweden
IBM is participating in the GrowSmarter EU project together with the city of Stockholm with the aim of reducing emissions in a growing city by making smarter decisions based on a better understanding of the flows of people and vehicles. Vehicle and people sensors are being installed in a part of the city and the project will collect the data and needs to process it to enable various types of analyses, predictions, and summary statistics. IBM is looking for one or two master project students to join the project team in this important area. A key part of this enablement is to translate the rather technical observations from the sensors to higher-value information that gives a view of the real traffic such as pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The focus of this project is to develop statistical models based on the sensor data, providing statistical interpretations in terms of movements of people and vehicles. The information also needs to be visualized to enable various stakeholders to understand its meaning. The work will begin with a literature survey where previous knowledge in the area is identified. Evaluation of the models will also be included, i.e. calibration against observed information. If time allows, the thesis project may proceed into further analysis based on the prepared data. The work will be performed in IBM’s premises in Kista, Stockholm. Some remote work may be permitted, up to 20%. Some field work should be expected. The work will begin as soon as possible and is estimated to be completed in April or May 2018.
