Volvo Group Thesis: Multivariable combustion control system in Göteborg, Sweden

Background

Diesel engines are forecasted to be the main motor for trucks in the foreseeable future. Large efforts are spent on refining the Diesel engine to reduce its environmental impact. In this project a method will be investigated that, if proven to be effective, can reduce the content of harmful exhaust gas components, reduce fuel consumption and at same time make the engine flexible for bio fuels. An advanced control system is to be designed to control the combustion by feedback from sensors that measures the pressure inside the cylinder.

Content

First, a literature study about in-cylinder pressure sensor based closed loop combustion control is to be made. Next, a multiple input & multiple output (MIMO) control structure is to be proposed that controls the shape of the cylinder pressure.

The next task is to implement a control system in the engine controller and finally perform the multivariable closed loop combustion control in an engine test cell.

Suitable Background

Candidates should be in the final year of their Master’s studies. Suitable masters’ programmers include Systems Control and Mechatronics, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automotive engineering, Mechanical engineering or Applied Physics. Candidates with equivalent background from other programs will also be considered. Preferably, at least one project member should have a fairly strong background in control.
